The biggest advantage is the size of the connecting fiber optic path, and the ability to carry more information along a single path. That said, the increase in complexity might make the common electrical system better if only a few sensors are needed. The value of the device being used has to be made an electrical signal, of some kind, and a multiplexing scheme used to keep all of the signals apart, and different from each other. The sensing of an even can not be done by a simple “on-off” event of the light in a fiber optic strand. The event is turned into an electrical value of some kind that is sent to the measuring device, usually a computer, and evaluated as to actual alarm value, or a bad signal that can be ignored. Fiber optics give speed, and higher capacity, and that is about all. They do have their own faults, such as multiplexed signals catching up with each other and blending together which makes all of the signals useless.
