Power inversion-Watts and appliances?

I am looking to buy a power inverter to prepare for hurricane season on the east coast. I was looking at some online and I am looking for a 12V to 115-120AC sine output. I am looking to run a fridge, a small television and possibly a hot plate from time to time. I know that they have wattage ratings. Do I have to buy one that matches the total wattage rating of all the appliances if I were to run them all at once, or do I look at the amperage? Do I have to buy the 1,500 watt or 750 watt inverter, if so why, if not which one do I choose? I got the battery part down, it is just the inverter I am looking into. If my mom would use a hair dryer, is this possible too? It’s been a long while since I’ve had some physics but I do understand circut diagrams. Anything visual helps in the explaining this.

You add the wattages of everything you want to try to run at once. Then you select a suitable inverter rated to exceed that total, continuously.
Dividing the total wattage by 12V will give you some idea of current needed at 12V., remember an inverter is not 100% efficient, so you probably need to add about 20% of the calculate current to allow for this.
I hope therefore, you understand the battery required to run high draw appliances like hotplates etc. will not be small batteries, if you expect long service hours.
