Hiring an Investigative Agency FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about hiring an Investigative Agency.

Why should I use your firm to conduct my domestic case?

A Need To Know, Inc. is a licensed and insured Investigation Agency that specializes in domestic related cases. While most firms tend to spend 95% of their time working insurance cases, we spend approximately 90% of our time working domestic cases.
A Need To Know only uses fully licensed investigators to work on your case. No trainee will EVER work your case alone.

Although a retainer is required before any work is preformed, unused portions of your retainer fee are refundable. Many firms keep the unused portions of your retainer fee for up to 5 years or longer after your case is completed to use toward any additional work. We believe that once your case is complete there is no need to keep your money any longer. If you have unused portions left on your retainer, it will be promptly refunded at the end of the investigation.
We keep in close contact with our clients offering them advice based on our past experience of investigating hundreds of domestic cases. We utilize state of the art equipment and experienced investigators to minimize the cost of your investigation.
You will receive a detailed professional report outlining everything that was done on your case. You will also get a detailed bill that will outline all the cost associated with your case.

How does this work? What do I do next?

Once you have decided to retain A Need To Know, Inc. for your investigative services, you will need to sign an agreement for services contract, complete the client intake form (client and subject information sheet) and pay your retainer fee by credit card (signed form also required) or by mailing a cashier's check or money in the amount of your retainer. We also accept wire transfers such as Western Union.
Once all the paperwork has been completed and we have received the retainer we can schedule the best possible time to conduct your surveillance. The forms can be returned to us via Fax, Mail, or scanned using a computer sent by e-mail.

Where can A Need To Know conduct surveillances?

A Need To Know is licensed to perform investigations through out the state of Florida. If the investigation has to be followed outside of Florida, our investigators are licensed to follow the case to many other states under reciprocal agreements. Can you guarantee the results?

Unfortunately NO firm can guarantee results. It is impossible to predict what any investigation may reveal. We certainly can give you some idea of the results that may be produced from your investigation based on our past experiences, but there is no way to guarantee results! We never make promises we can't keep!

I tried to do the investigation myself. Can you help me now?

Unfortunately many people try to do their own investigations. If you try to do the investigation yourself, you stand a very good chance of botching it. Once the PERSON knows he/she is under investigation, you can usually give it up. In some situations you could also be arrested for stalking! It is better to invest the money with a reputable and licensed private investigator that specializes in domestic cases and have it done right the first time. In most cases judges will dismiss any evidence that is provided by you, a friend or someone directly related to you. The judge will hold a lot more weight to evidence that is gathered by an experienced licensed private investigator.

My attorney says I don't need an investigator. Can he handle everything?

There are times when you don't need the services of a private investigator. However if you suspect your partner is cheating, you need evidence to prove it. Attorneys are not investigators and do not gather evidence. They simple present the evidence that you collect in court. When one party of a civil domestic suit has evidence collected by a unbiased licensed private investigator it removes the "he said" "she said" out of the court room. This generally will make an out of court settlement more likely and save you a considerable amount of time and money. We would never conduct an investigation that we know would not be beneficial to your case. If you need help in determining if our services will benefit you, please contact us.

What if you lose my spouse/partner while on surveillance?

Conducting moving surveillance on ANY vehicle is very difficult. There are times when we may lose the person that we are watching. At times it may be necessary to let the person that we are watching go. Sometimes people who we are conducting surveillance on are looking over their shoulder to see if anyone is watching or following them. An experienced investigator will never continue to follow someone who is trying to determine if they are being followed. Remember you can always come back, but not if you get noticed!

How much will my retainer fee be?

Your retainer fee will be determined by the number of hours we believe will be invested in the case and the amount of resources that need to be allocated to your case. Retainer fees will be discussed with each client and determined on an individual basis. Most retainer fees for domestic cases average about $1200.00

How much will the investigation cost?

There is no way to determine the exact cost of any domestic investigation. There are too many variables to consider when conducting a domestic investigation. However industry standards suggest that most domestic cases cost around $1000.00 to $5000.00.

At A Need To Know on average domestic cases from start to finish generally cost around $500.00 to $3000.00. While many private investigation firms will not give you an estimate, we specialize in these types of cases and work them on a continual basis. There are a couple of reasons why we generally close cases quicker and cheaper than other firms:

  1. We only use fully licensed and experienced investigators to work your case. No trainees will EVER work your case alone. Experienced investigators are more likely to gather the evidence you need in a shorter period of time.
  2.
We maintain contact with the clients during any surveillance to ensure that a need remains for us to be there. Sometimes there is no need to continue surveillance when the person we are watching is obviously not doing anything during this surveillance. Instead of burning up your retainer we will recommend that you continue the surveillance another day!
  3.
We will make recommendations based on our experience if it seems feasible to terminate the surveillance. The final decision must be made by the client.
  4.
We specialize in domestic cases. Most private investigative firms specialize in insurance work. It is usually easier and steadier work than domestic cases. Adjusters unlike spouses/partners are not emotionally involved with the cases. Therefore the investigator has less to deal with. At A Need To Know most of our cases are domestic. If you have transmission problems on your car, would you take it to someone who specialized in brakes? Don't make the mistake of getting someone who is not experienced with working domestic cases.
  5.
We utilize technology vs. surveillance when feasible to get evidence and answers before we ever begin surveillance to reduce the number of billable hours. We utilize that evidence gathered through specialized search and technology to eliminate the need for any lengthy unnecessary surveillance.
We invest thousands of dollars every year on equipment, training and databases so that we can offer the best service and product possible.

When you shop around you will find that we are not the cheapest. Unfortunately you only have one shot at a domestic investigation. If someone "Cheaper" and maybe less experienced works on your case and makes a mistake, your case is over. It is not likely that another qualified firm can pick up your case and successfully gather the evidence you need. Do you really want to go bargain shopping for this type of service? When so much is at stake!

The bottom line is not how much you pay for each hour, but how much you pay in the end. As I indicated earlier, even though we are not the cheapest firm, we generally close cases in a shorter period of time saving you sometimes hundreds or thousands of dollars. You get what you pay for!

What happens if I don't use my entire retainer?

Many private investigation firms do not refund unused portions of the retainer. So if you discontinue the case or the case is resolved in a short amount time and money is left over, THEY KEEP IT! Most firms will allow that money to go toward future work over the next five years.
We take pride in trying to complete your investigation and obtain the evidence that you need as quickly as possible. Thus many of our client's receive retainer fee refunds. We don't see the need to keep your money after the investigation is over. If you need us again, we can obtain a new retainer.

My spouse/partner controls all the money. How can I pay you?

Many times clients are stay at home partners or have partners who control the finances for the family. It is sometimes difficult to pay retainer fees without the partner finding out.
We suggest that you borrow the money from a family member or friend and once the investigation is complete and you have the evidence you need, then you repay the person who you borrowed from. Does it really matter if your partner finds out after the investigation is over? Not to mention that you don't have to really reveal why you borrowed money from your friend or family member.

I confronted my partner with evidence of cheating. Can you still do surveillance?

We NEVER advise a client to confront their partner with any evidence that may have. Never threaten to hire a private investigator! We can still work your case in most situations where you have confronted your partner, however sometimes it may require that we use additional resources and/or an additional investigator to work your case.

If an investigator is needed to appear in court, what are the cost?

The cost and scheduling are the same as for investigations. A $600 retainer will be required when scheduling a court date.
